Former Sicilian regional deputy Paolo Ruggirello got 12 years in jail Wednesday for Mafia charges.
The Court of Trapani found Ruggirello guilty of external complicity in Mafia association.
Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) prosecutor Gianluca De Leo, who had charged him with mafia association had asked for the politician to be sentenced to 20 years.
The investigation that led to the trial was coordinated by deputy prosecutor Paolo Guido and led to the imprisonment of 28 people, including lieutenants and associates of Cosa Nostra superboss Matteo Messina Denaro, captured in mid-January after 30 years on the run.
