A Mafia boss arrested in a big police sweep in and around Trapani Tuesday was intercepted on the phone admitting that he had met late 30-year fugitive superboss Matteo Messina Denaro in a cave near his fief in the western Sicilian city.
Vito Manzo, who is set to serve a sentence for mafia association, told other bosses that he had met Messina Denaro, who died of cancer a month ago aged 61, in order to prove to them how reliable he was, police said in commenting on the intercept.
In all, 21 suspected and convicted mafiosi were arrested in the Trapani sweep.
A former deputy mayor of a local town was also arrested.
