Sicily's skies continue to amaze and capture even NASA's attention, thanks to an extraordinary shot taken by photographer Gianni Tumino in Ragusa, at Cozzo Rose. This evocative image depicting the rise of the first Supermoon of August was chosen as the "Photo of the Day" on August 30.
The photo was taken on August 1, coinciding with the first full moon of the month, which was near its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee. NASA described this Supermoon as a "brighter than usual lunar disk," captured as it rose above a thick layer of clouds along Ragusa's eastern horizon in Sicily.
This recognition came on the day of the second Supermoon of 2023, known as the Blue Supermoon, a rare event that occurs only once every two or three years. This phenomenon illuminated the skies on the night of August 30th and 31st, providing a spectacular show.
